School of Theatre & Dance Graduate Admissions

The successful applicant to a master's program typically has a GPA of at least 3.0 in undergraduate work. The successful applicant to the doctoral program typically has a GPA of at least 3.4 in master's work. It is expected that a student entering a graduate program has successfully completed certain courses prior to their graduate work. The successful graduate student may be asked to level in courses they have not taken.

An interview may be scheduled after application and prior to admission.

Applicants will not be evaluated until all of the requirements below have been submitted. The Graduate School will notify applicants when their applications are complete; when tey have been referred to the School of Theatre and Dance for consideration; and when an admissions decision has been made.

MA Dance Studies

Apply through the Texas Tech Graduate School Application Portal

  • Provide transcripts from all previous college-level study
  • Provide all required supplemental items:
    • 2 letters of recommendation, preferably from sources in theatre or dance
    • CV/Resume
    • Payment of required application fee
  • Academic writing sample of 5-10 pages
  • Statement of Purpose
    • Elaborate on your academic, artistic, and/or professional interests and goals specific to the program of study you wish to pursue
    • Briefly describe the aspects of your background relevant to your interest. This could include your undergraduate studies, previous graduate study, and/or professional work.

MA Theatre Arts

Apply through the Texas Tech Graduate School Application Portal

  • Undergraduate degree transcript(s)

  • Provide all required supplemental items:

    • Two letters of recommendation, preferably from people in dance

    • CV/Resume

    • Payment of required application fee

  • Academic writing sample of 5-10 pages

  • Statement of purpose for graduate studies in dance:

    • Elaborate on your academic, artistic, and/or professional interests and goals specific to this program

    • Briefly describe the aspects of your background relevant to your interest. This could include your undergraduate studies, previous graduate study, and/or professional work.

MFA Theatre Arts

Apply through the Texas Tech Graduate School Application Portal

  • Provide transcripts from all previous college-level study
  • Provide all required supplemental items:
    • 3 letters of recommendation, preferably from sources in theatre or dance
    • CV/Resume
    • Payment of required application fee
    • Scholarly writing sample (minimum of 750 words), preferably on a theatre or dance topic
  • Statement of Purpose
    • Elaborate on your academic, artistic, and/or professional interests and goals specific to the program of study you wish to pursue
    • Briefly describe the aspects of your background relevant to your interest. This could include your undergraduate studies, previous graduate study, and/or professional work.
  • Sample of Artistic Work (related to area you wish to pursue)

MFA Performance & Pedagogy

  • Please submit a link to your 1–2-minute video audition with two contrasting monologues. Upon review, applicant may be asked to attend a live callback and interview with faculty

MFA Playwriting 

  • Please submit one original full-length play or long one-act play that best represents your work. Collaborations, adaptations, screenplays, television scripts, and musicals will not be accepted. Upon review, applicant may be asked to attend a live interview with faculty. 

MFA Design

  • Please submit a portfolio of your design work (website with archive, photos, in portfolio format, etc.). Please do not submit original renderings. Upon review, applicant may be asked to attend a live interview with faculty

MFA Arts Administration

  • Optional: Please provide material(s) or further information related to projects you have created or developed in an administrative role. Upon review of application, applicant may be asked to attend a live interview with faculty. 

PhD Fine Arts (Theatre)

Apply through the Texas Tech Graduate School Application Portal

  • Provide transcripts from all previous college-level study
  • Provide all required supplemental items:
    • 3 letters of recommendation, preferably from sources in theatre or dance
    • CV/Resume
    • Official GRE score report
    • Payment of required application fee
    • Scholarly writing sample: 10-30 pages of your best research or academic writing
  • Statement of Purpose
    • Elaborate on your academic, artistic, and/or professional interests and goals specific to the program of study you wish to pursue
    • Briefly describe the aspects of your background relevant to your interest. This could include your undergraduate studies, previous graduate study, and/or professional work.
    • The Fine Arts Doctoral Program offers a unique interdisciplinary education in Art, Music, Theatre, and Philosophy; and provides a comprehensive approach to doctoral study of the arts. Describe your interest in the interdisciplinary core curriculum of our doctoral program.
