This fall, the School of Theatre and Dance welcomes its newest visiting lecturer in
dance, Kevin Guy. Guy earned his BFA in Contemporary Dance from the University of
North Carolina and his MFA from Hollins University/American Dance Festival High-Residency
Program. The native Texan is enthusiastic about his return to the Lone Star State
and brings fresh ideas to the Texas Tech dance program.
Originally from South Fort Worth, Guy's attraction to dance began by watching free
dance episodes on PBS. “My interest started at a young age,” said Guy, “but I couldn't
fulfill that until I was 17. A lot of us share that story.”
Guy wasted no time reaching out to the community. On August 28, he worked with groups
of high school students from dance programs around Lubbock with different social and
economic backgrounds.
“That was phenomenal,” said Guy. “We were able to break down barriers, mix in together,
and learn from each other. You know, just grow, be by somebody you haven't been around
before. That's my whole mission…100 percent arts and education, the community, the
community of color, so we can have representation, not only for us, but for everybody
in the dance room.”
He began his career in Dallas where he performed in Debbie Allen's and Imagination
Celebration Dallas production of Pepito's Story. He went on to perform in productions such as The Black Nativity and Spreadin' Rhythm Around: A Celebration of the Life and Music of Luther Henderson directed by George C. Wolfe; the feature film, Across the Universe; and with the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation Arts in Education.
Living and working in New York City, Guy knew he wanted to return to his home state
and share with others what he learned from some of the industry's top professionals:
“I want to bring all that experience back because there are so many things—me being
Texan, me being black, me being a black gay male—I didn't get. I want to go teach
these students and give them the opportunity to be able to go anywhere they choose.”
