Chris Cook and all his rings!

At the College of Media & Communication, students turn their passion for sports into real-world media experience, from the classroom to the sidelines.

Do you want to work in sports media — covering games, producing content, managing press or launching advertising campaigns? At Texas Tech University, the College of Media & Communication (CoMC) offers the training, tools and real-world experience to help turn your passion for sports into a professional career.

For Chris Cook, assistant professor of practice and assistant dean of enrollment management and marketing, working in sports media has always been more than a job, it’s been about being part of the team. Before joining the college in his current role, Cook spent 17 years in collegiate athletics, including 11 years at Texas Tech and 10 seasons alongside head football coach Mike Leach. During that time, the Red Raiders went to a bowl game every single year.

“A perk of the job for me is working with people,” Cook said. “Sports is a total team effort, even staff off the field, and those relationships help support the program in many different ways.”

At the College of Media & Communication, students don’t just learn about sports media, they live it. From day one, they have the opportunity to get behind the scenes and contribute to real productions that reach Red Raider fans across platforms.

Hands-on experience is built into the curriculum and student life. Students can gain real-world skills through RaiderVision, The Hub@TTU and The Outpost, where they produce, report and create content for actual audiences. CoMC offers a practicum course that allows students to earn course credit while working with these outlets, combining academic learning with immersive sports media training.

Students can also get involved through campus media organizations like KTXT-FM 88.1 The Raider and The Daily Toreador, where they can cover live Texas Tech games, report on athletics and build a professional portfolio before graduation.

For students looking to specialize, CoMC offers a sports media certificate designed to prepare graduates for careers in the industry. Courses such as Sports Advertising, Sports Public Relations and Sports Media Production provide a strong foundation in the communication strategies that power modern sports media, both on and off the field.

Communication plays a critical role in the success of any athletic organization, and the demand for skilled media professionals continues to grow. Career paths in sports media range from digital content creation, social media management and public relations to live event production, sports broadcasting and media relations.

Graduates from the College of Media & Communication have gone on to work not only with Texas Tech Athletics, but with major collegiate programs, professional sports teams and national media outlets.

If you're passionate about sports and driven to be part of the team behind the scenes, Texas Tech’s College of Media & Communication offers the path to turn that passion into a profession.
