Myron Kandel

Myron Kandel is one of the nation's best-known financial journalists. As one of the founders of CNN, he pioneered financial news on television and served as the network's financial editor and economic commentator for 25 years. In 2000, he was named one of the 10 most influential financial journalists of the 20th century.

He previously served as the financial editor of three newspapers: the Washington Star, the New York Herald Tribune, and the New York Post. He was also a reporter for The New York Times; a foreign correspondent for the Herald Tribune, covering Germany and the European Common Market; a syndicated newspaper columnist; and the editor of the New York Law Journal.

From 1976 to 1982, Kandel co-authored “The Greer/Kandel Report,” a syndicated financial column that appeared in leading papers around the country. He was the commentator for “Moneyline,” CNN's flagship business news program, and he anchored financial news updates on CNN, CNNfn and CNN International.

Kandel is the author of “How to Cash in on the Coming Stock Market Boom,” published in January 1982, which accurately forecast the bull market that began that August.

He also has written a number of magazine articles and has been published in Harper's, Institutional Investor, The New York Times Book Review, Finance Magazine, Nation's Business, and The Bulletin of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

Kandel began his career in journalism as a copy boy at The New York Times, working nights while completing his senior year at Brooklyn College and earning a master's degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. As an Army enlisted man, he served as Washington correspondent for Armed Forces Press Service and Pacific Stars & Stripes. He later taught at Columbia and the City College of New York.

Kandel has been the president of five journalism groups, including the New York Financial Writers' Association; the Alumni Association of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism; the Deadline Club Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists; and the Society of the Silurians. He served twice, 20 years apart, as president of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

Among other honors, he has received lifetime achievement awards from the Loeb Foundation, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, and the New York Financial Writers' Association. He is the recipient of a Peabody Award from the University of Georgia. In 2010, he received a gold medal for distinction in journalism from the University Of Missouri School of Journalism.

He is also the recipient of four honorary doctoral degrees – from Washington & Lee College in Pennsylvania; Bethany College in West Virginia; Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire; and Midland Lutheran College in Nebraska.
