Dr. Jongwoo Lee is an assistant professor of Special Education at Texas Tech University, where he also serves as the coordinator for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Program in the Virginia Murray Sowell Center for Research and Education in Sensory Disabilities.

His research focuses on how students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing learn a second language, with a special interest in how grammar and sentence structures develop over time. By studying these patterns, he aims to improve teaching methods and support language learning for this population.

Dr. Lee is also passionate about Universal Design for Learning (UDL)—an approach that makes education accessible to all students. Drawing on his experience leading inclusive international research trips for college students with special needs, he explores how UDL principles can be applied in diverse, real‑world learning environments.

Before joining Texas Tech, Dr. Lee worked at The Ohio State University with “Deaf Plus” students—individuals who are Deaf and have additional disabilities such as intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorders. His work there focused on meeting students’ communication needs and preparing them for meaningful vocational opportunities.
