Brent Phillips
BRENT PHILLIPS has been the Assistant Professor of Trombone at Baylor University since the fall of 2004. Currently Mr. Phillips is the principal trombonist of the Waco Symphony and is also principal trombone of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra in Pennsylvania. As trombonist with the "President's Own", Mr. Phillips has gained extensive experience as a soloist. He has been featured with the Marine Band Chamber Orchestra playing the Concerto for Alto Trombone and Orchestra by Johann Albrechtsberger and has been a frequent soloist with the Marine Band during the summer concert series on the National Mall and Wolf Trap Farm Park in Northern Virginia. In the fall of 2000, Mr. Phillips was a featured soloist on the Marine Band's fifty-two day national concert tour throughout the Southeast performing Arthur Pryor's "Blue Bells of Scotland".
Since 1996, Mr. Phillips has been principal trombone with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of maestro Stuart Malina and has enjoyed Harrisburg as a vibrant and culturally rich city in which to work. Mr. Phillips has been a soloist on two occasions with the Harrisburg Symphony and is honored that Harrisburg will premiere a major work for trombone and orchestra.
Mr. Phillips has performed with the Richmond Symphony, Delaware Symphony, Maryland Symphony, Alexandria Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Fairfax Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic and the Washington Symphonic Brass. This past year Mr. Phillips has performed regularly with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and the San Antonio Symphony. He recently recorded with the New Colombian Wind Band, and was a soloist at the 2002 Great American Brass Band Festival in Danville, Kentucky. Mr. Phillips can be heard playing all of the trombone tracks on Discovery Channels Shark Week 03 and Oshea's Adventure on Animal Planet, has recorded with the Washington Symphonic Brass as well as numerous Marine Band recordings from 1996 through 2003. Many live concert venues with the Marine Band have been aired on NPR's Performance Today.
Mr. Phillips recently gave the world premiere of "Tarkus" for trombone and orchestra with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra in May of 2007. The work received rave reviews and was featured in a recent New York Times article on trombone soloists and commissions.
Mr. Phillips is an active clinician and guest artist around the country at many colleges and universities and has been a soloist at the Eastern Trombone Workshop hosted by the US Army Band. Mr. Phillips was a featured soloist at the Texas Music Educators Association conference in 2004 with the Baylor Wind Ensemble performing Richard Peaslee's epic work, Arrows of Time for several thousand in attendance. As an active clinician, he has adjudicated the U.I.L Texas State Solo and Ensemble competition, has presented clinics at the 2006 TMEA conference and was chosen to coach sectionals to the 2006 Texas All-State trombone sections. As an educator in the state of Texas, Mr. Phillips was selected to choose the All-State repertoire for the entire state of Texas and presented a performance clinic at last year's American Bandmasters Association in San Antonio. Mr. Phillips is an Edwards artist and clinician and plays exclusively on Edwards Trombones.
Since Mr. Phillips began teaching in 2004, his students have gone on to successful teaching careers, participated in the nations leading summer music festivals, placed in international solo trombone competitions and have been accepted into top graduate programs and conservatories.
Mr. Phillips is a founding member of the Stentorian Consort consisting of three other prominent professional trombone players. The Stentorian Consort will be releasing their first CD "Myths and Legends" in the summer of 2007 consisting of all first recordings by such composers as Eric Ewazen, Fisher Tull, Charles Wourinen, Leslie Basett, John LaMontaine and a new work by Harrisburg's principal trumpet, Phil Snedecor. Stentorian Consort has been featured at trombone conferences and workshops and has recently completed a week long tour of universities in Texas Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Mr. Phillips grew up in Houston Texas playing trombone and attended Westfield High School under Director of Bands, Philip Geiger. His primary teachers who were members of the Houston Symphony and Houston Grand Opera and included Jim Pedigo, David Waters and David Kirk. He also studied briefly with Alan Barnhill and John McCroskey of the Houston Symphony as well as Per Brevig of the New York Metropolitan Opera. Mr. Phillips received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degree in trombone performance from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.
While in Houston Mr. Phillips was a member of the prestigious Ambient Brass Quintet of Houston and was Adjunct Lecturer of Trombone at Lee College in Baytown Texas where he maintained an active teaching studio. During his years of study at Rice University, Mr. Phillips taught privately in the Katy, Cy-Fair and Spring Branch school districts in the greater Houston area.
