Student Advisory Committee
The School of Music Student Advisory Committee (SAC) gives students from all areas and degree programs within the school a voice in decision-making and governance. The SAC is a recommending body that meets once a month each semester to discuss issues and plans you would like to bring before the School of Music Administration. If you have questions or concerns that you would like addressed, please contact one of these representatives via email.
Sydney Bonnell
Sydney Bonnell holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance from UC Davis with minors
in education and psychology, a Master of Arts in Music Education from Oregon State
University, and she is currently in her second year as a PhD Student in Music Education
at Texas Tech. Before coming to Texas Tech, she was an Assistant Band Director at
Del Rio High School. Sydney is currently a Music Education TA at Texas Tech, a Marching
Band Tech at Lubbock-Cooper High School, and a private lesson instructor for Frenship
and Lubbock-Cooper ISD. After graduating with her PhD in Music Education, she plans
to continue to teach in the public school system.

Brynnan Brooks
Brynnan Brooks is a mezzo-soprano from Lubbock, Texas in her senior year at Texas
Tech University. She is currently preparing to perform Orfeo in Glucks Orfeo ed Euridice at Maedgen Theater (Lubbock) and Centro Nacional de los Artes (Mexico City). She
has performed Mrs. Herring in Albert Herring, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, 3rd Lady/3rd Spirit in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Rapunzel in Into the Woods, among others. She also participated in the Music in the Marche program in Mondavio,
Italy and traveled throughout Germany. Her current obsession is Spider Solitaire and
her super cool book club. She is very excited to serve on this committee and meet
more people at the School of Music.

Olivia Burns
Olivia is a first-year master's student pursuing a degree in Voice Performance. She
grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and she spent the last four years at Baldwin Wallace
University in Berea, Ohio, earning her bachelor's degree in Voice Performance with
an emphasis in vocal pedagogy. In addition to her personal interest in vocal science,
she loves acting and storytelling through song, especially through early music, opera,
oratorio, and musical theater. She studies with Professor Eric Stokloßa, and currently
serves as an Opera TA and course assistant. She has cherished every minute of collaboration
and connection with her peers in the graduate school and voice area, and she looks
forward to helping their voices be heard as the School of Music continues to grow.

Stephanie Burton
Stephanie Burton is in her first year at Texas Tech to earn her DMA in Choral Conducting.
Stephanie has taught in Texas for over twenty years in music education, from Pre-K
through college age students. Stephanie earned her masters in music education from
Texas Womans University, where she directed the University Chorus, taught music education
courses, and was a voice instructor. Stephanie is happily married, and they have four
beautiful children together. Stephanie is excited to serve on the School of Music
Student Advisory Committee and hopes to represent the choral students of Texas Tech
well.

Esteban Chavez
Esteban is currently pursuing a master's degree in Horn Performance and is a TA in the Horn studio. He is a member of the TTU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, University Symphony Orchestra, Horn Octet as well as a Section Horn with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. Esteban received his Bachelors in Music Education from Stephen F. Austin State University and is originally from Pasadena, Texas.
Esteban is happy to serve on the student advisory committee as the representative
for the Graduate Woodwind, Brass and Percussion areas.

Jack Dobrott
Jack Dobrott is a sophomore at Texas Tech University majoring in Jazz Performance and Music Education.
He has performed with the TTU Jazz Ensemble and the Texas Jazz Express and has been
a Featured soloist for the Richardson Community Jazz Swingers. Jack is heavily involved
with the saxophone studio and currently works as a woodwind technician for the Texas
Horn Traders.

Shawn Earthman
Shawn Earthman is a first-year masters student at Texas Tech University, pursuing
a degree in Violin Performance under the instruction of Annie Chalex Boyle. Shawn
holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from Texas Tech University.
Currently, she serves as an Administrative Teaching Assistant for the TTU School of
Music and enjoys the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff. Shawn is an
active member of the University Symphony Orchestra, as well as an officer for the
Texas Tech chapter of the American String Teachers Association. Outside of school,
she performs as a section violin in the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and maintains a
private Suzuki violin studio. Shawn is honored to serve on the Student Advisory Committee
and represent the string community at Texas Tech.

Gregory Faught
Gregory is a second-year undergraduate music performance major who specializes in
classical double bass. He performs in many ensembles including Abilene Philharmonic,
Lubbock Symphony, San Angelo Symphony, and The Texas Tech University Symphony. In
addition to playing in all these ensembles, Gregory is a member of the ASTA-TTU student
chapter and attends all meetings and social events. Gregory is excited to serve on
the student advisory committee as the undergraduate representative of the string area.

Devin Guerrero
Devin is a fourth-year PhD student of music theory in the TCVPA Fine Arts Doctoral
program. He holds degrees in music theory and music education from the University
of North Texas and the University of Colorado, Boulder. Between earning his degrees,
Devin worked as an orchestra and choir director in Austin ISD. His research has featured
at the Society for Music Theory and Society for Music Perception and Cognition conferences
and received an award for best student paper at the 2024 Texas Society for Music Theory
conference. His research investigates interactions of the voice and music, including
vocal production in pop, phrase in rap, and the interaction of harmony and lyrics
in indie rock. His other interests include corpus study, theory pedagogy, music cognition,
and improvisation. Devin also works as a freelance bassist and string pedagogue. As
the Graduate Student Liaison for the Student Affairs Committee, Devin hopes to assist
in maintaining transparency between students and faculty in the School of Music. He
is excited and grateful to serve.

John Hewitt
Hello my name John Hewitt, I am a 5th year Pre-Nursing Music Education and Trombone
Performance Major. I am from Rowlett, Texas. I love the SoM at TTU because of the
faculty to student ratio and being able to take lessons with my actual trombone professor
instead of a grad student. A fun Fact about me is I am ambidextrous!

Ziyan Hu
Ziyan Hu is a first-year student in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at Texas Tech
University, specializing in vocal performance. She currently is a teaching assistant
for the TTU opera where she combines her passion for both teaching and performing.
She holds a bachelors degree from Zhaoqing University, and masters degrees from
Wuhan Conservatory of Music in China and North Dakota State University. As a member
of the School of Music Student Advisory Committee, she hopes to work to enhance the
student experience, support her peers, represent students voices, and advocate for
their needs. Ziyan looks forward to making a positive impact within the School of
Music by contributing to a collaborative and helpful atmosphere.

Mark Huffines
Mark is a third-year undergraduate Music Education/Vocal Performance major. He is
an active member of the choral and opera programs in the university, and currently
serves as the Vice President of University Choir.

Yuwei Jiang
Yuwei Jiang, originally from China. She is a second-year DMA student in Piano Performance
at Texas Tech University. She is a teaching assistant for group piano teaching and
accompaniment. She received her Bachelors degree in Musicology (teacher education)
from Nanjing Normal University in China and her Master's degree in Music Performance
from Bowling Green State University. Yuwei is thrilled to join Student Advisory Committee
this year, she is supportive and looking forward to growing up with peers and the
School of Music.

Khang Ma
Khang Ma is a third year undergraduate in Piano Performance, currently studying with
Professor Daniel del Pino. He has participated in lessons and masterclasses with Alexander
Kobrin, Wu Han, Michael Chertock, and Jihea Hong-Park, amongst others. Khangs accomplishments
and recognitions include the School of Music Undergraduate Excellence in Keyboard
Award and first prizes at the Nelda Hodges, South Texas, and Wayland Baptist competitions.
He is an active performer and accompanist and has worked with many musicians from
TTU and the Lubbock area, in and outside of classical settings. Past collaborations
include TTU Opera Outreach program as well as the Matador Workshop. Currently, he
serves as a pianist at Lakeridge Methodist Church. Khang is excited and humbled to
represent the Keyboard Area as well as the School of Music student body.

Maya McBrayer
Maya McBrayer grew up in San Antonio, Texas where she graduated from Smithson Valley
High School in 2021. She currently attends Texas Tech University where she plans to
graduate in December of 2025 with degrees in both Instrumental Music Education and
Flute Performance. Maya has had the privilege of performing with numerous university
ensembles, including the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the University Symphony Orchestra,
Mariachi Los Matadores, and the Goin' Band From Raiderland. At Texas Tech, she is
a member of Tau Beta Sigma and the Sigma Alpha Iota petitioning group at TTU, both
national music service sororities. Outside of Texas Tech, Maya teaches flute and works
as a marching/drum major technician at multiple secondary schools throughout Lubbock.
As of August 2024, she has completed three seasons of drum corps as a Drum Major with
the Sacramento Mandarins, where she earned the "Mandarins Member of the Year" award
in 2023.

Dustin Pedigo
Dustin Pedigo is a working musician and educator out of Lubbock, currently pursuing
a masters degree in jazz performance on double bass. Having worked in Lubbock for
15 years, he is an active participant in the Lubbock music community, playing predominantly
jazz and commercial music. Catch him playing regularly most weekends with several
local acts including the Jonny Verbeten Trio, Mouse Shadow, GroundFloor, Jeremy Couture,
or in the pit of a musical theater production. Prior to returning to Texas Tech for
graduate school, he was a private lesson teacher as well as a classroom teacher of
math and science. During his time at Texas Tech he has participated in Jazz Orchestra
and combos, had the privilege of attending and participating in presenting at the
annual Jazz Educators Network conference, and received the Friends of Music award
for Excellence in Jazz and Commercial Music.

Tristin Swisher
Tris Swisher is a second-year masters student in Musicology and a graduate teaching assistant at TTU. She is a clarinetist, who performs with the TTU Balkans ensemble and holds a bachelors in Instrumental Music Education from Angelo State University. With a background in clarinet pedagogy, her current research specializes in digital humanities and popular music. Though appearing in several regional conferences, her most recent accomplishment was acceptance in the International Conference on New Directions in the Humanities for her work “Post-Irony, Memetic Propaganda, and Alt-Right Appropriation of Turbo-folk”
Tris is excited to serve on the student advisory committee for the opportunity to
help represent student voices and contribute to shaping the future of the School of
Music.

Mia Wang
Cheng-Yun Mia Wang is a PhD candidate in the Fine Arts- Musicology Program at Texas
Tech University, where she is also pursuing a graduate certificate in Music Cognition.
She holds a bachelors degree in music from National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu,
Taiwan, as well as masters degrees in performance and musicology from Northern Illinois
University and Texas Tech University. Her current research explores cross-cultural
music, timbre, and tonality perception. She is delighted to be part of the Student
Advisory Committee this year, listening to students and helping to improve students'
experience at the School of Music.

Anna Wilmoth
Anna Wilmoth is a senior undergraduate Music Theory major with a concentration in
harp and a minor in Womens and Gender Studies. Anna has attended Texas Tech University
since the fall of 2020 as a Music Education major before switching to Music Theory
in 2023. For the last two semesters, Anna has worked as a Learning Assistant for Theory
I and II, helping students in class as well as weekly tutoring. Additionally, In February
2023, Anna and Marc Santa presented their research proposal, “The Functions of Commercial
Music in Horror Media” at the Texas Society for Music Theory conference. Outside of
school, Anna is a student assistant and archivist at the Southwest Collection Music
Archives, which she hopes to pursue as her career.
