Programs of Study in Music Education

The Music Education program at Texas Tech University offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Education, a Master of Music Education (thesis and non-thesis tracks), a Ph.D. in Music Education, and a Ph.D. in Fine Arts with a Concentration in Music Education.

Students who earn a Bachelor of Music in Music Education will also earn an EC-12 Texas Teaching Certificate in Music. This undergraduate degree and teaching certificate will provide graduates with an opportunity to apply for music educator positions in public and private schools.

Students who earn a Master of Music Education are able to enter/return to the teaching profession with additional knowledge, experiences, and credentials that should enable them to have greater levels of success with the teaching and learning of music to learners of all levels and in varied music settings.

Students who earn a Ph.D. in Music Education engage a core curriculum of 20-24 core hours that emphasize expertise in music education content knowledge, expertise in music educator preparation, and music education research design and methods. Ph.D. in Music Education students are also required to select 1 - 2 cognates, which will enable doctoral students to complete additional courses in self-selected areas of specialization. The music education concentration within the Ph.D. in Fine Arts includes fine arts requirements and electives, an individualized music curriculum, music education courses, and a dissertation.

What Sets Us Apart

The Bachelor degree of Music in Music Education prepares undergraduate students and individuals who are seeking credentials to teach music in the schools to effectively teach band, choral, orchestra, and classroom general music in pre-kindergarten, elementary, middle, junior high, and senior high schools. During the student teaching semester, which is required for certification, undergraduate music education majors at Texas Tech University are allowed to request to student teach in our Texas cities/towns that are outside of the Lubbock area. These requests are reviewed and decided upon by the music education faculty.

The undergraduate in music education program also allows eligible undergraduate students to enroll in 9 specified hours and count those hours toward both the Bachelor of Music in Music Education and the Masters of Music Education degrees at Texas Tech University. Students who apply and are admitted into this program enroll in the School of Music as well as the Graduate School while they are still undergraduates.

The Master of Music Education (MME) degree may be attained with the completion of a 30-hour program (thesis) or a 36-hour program (non-thesis). The MME may be pursued either in-person or at a distance and graduate courses that are required for this master's degree are offered in a variety of modalities.

Texas Tech University is only one of a few universities in the state of Texas that offers a PhD in Music Education in addition to a PhD in Fine Arts - Music with a Concentration in Music Education, the latter of which provides doctoral students with opportunities to explore both the fine arts and music education. By offering both of these doctoral degrees in music education, prospective doctoral students have two options from which they may choose for their pursuits of a terminal degree.
