About
James R. Burns is a full professor of operations management and information technology
in the Rawls College of Business Administration at Texas Tech University, Lubbock,
Texas. He received his MS and PhD degrees in operations research from Purdue University.
He holds the PMP and CIRM certifications provided by the Project Management Institute
and the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He is the author or co-author
of several books on management science and information technology and more than 100
journal articles and published presentations. He regularly teaches courses in operations
management and project management.
Burns' research is focused on new developments in project/process management and on
understanding the dynamics of oil and gas production in the Permian Basin. He is interested
in the synergistic use of concepts borrowed from Boehm, Covey, Crosby, Deming, Forrester,
Goldratt, Hammer, Humphreys, Senge and others in the design of processes. Currently,
he is focused on improving the methods/models IT teams use to develop software products.
He also enjoys using simulation and other tools to garner new knowledge about the
dynamics of processes, particularly supply chains.
