Katharine Scherff

Katharine D Scherff is an Art historian at Texas Tech University and is an affiliated faculty with the TTU Medieval and Renaissance Studies Center. As a scholar of media theory, Medieval European Art History, and visual culture, Dr Scherff's interests center on the art of the 14th and 15th centuries, emphasizing materiality, liturgical ritual, and contemporary media technology.

An interest in interdisciplinary discourse and critical theory shapes her research in religious materiality, perception, and viewership. In addition, Dr Scherff has enjoys scholarly and pedagogical research on queer and gender theory. She has published works on hagiography, pilgrimage, iconography, materiality, and gender performance.  Dr Scherff's recent publications include two books --The Virtual Liturgy and Ritual Artifacts in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and a co-edited volume Media Technologies and the Digital Humanities in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, both released in 2023. She continues her research in media and materiality, but more recently has been focusing on the body and embodiment theory.
