Certificate in Art History, Criticism, & Theory
The Graduate Certificate program in Art History, Criticism, and Theory provides a knowledge base in art history and its affiliated areas of art criticism and art theory. The certificate program comprises a minimum of 15 semester hours of graduate work that includes 6 semester hours of required courses and 9 semester hours of related courses in art history and criticism chosen in consultation with the GCAHCT coordinator.
What is a Graduate Certificate?
A graduate certificate program is a set of courses (usually five, 15 credit hours) that provides in-depth knowledge in a specific subject. The group of certificate courses provides a coherent knowledge base, but at a less advanced level than the set of courses in a graduate academic program such as the MA. The graduate certificate is a means to obtain formalized credit for completion of a body of coursework. A graduate certificate may be preferable to a minor, as while courses completed for a minor within a degree program are credited on the transcript, the name of the minor is not recorded. Those who complete a certificate program receive a certificate of completion, and the transcript records the certificate.
Admissions
HOW DO I APPLY?
Please contact the GCAHCT coordinator, Dr. Theresa Flanigan, regarding application (see below).
Admission into the Certificate program requires prior admission into a graduate degree
program at TTU (which need not be in the SOA or TCVPA). In most cases, students apply
directly to the Graduate School for admission into that TTU graduate program.
WHAT BACKGROUND DO I NEED?
The minimum pre-requisite is 6 credit hours in art history at the undergraduate or graduate level. These 6 credit hours can be taken as ‘leveling courses in the art history area of the SOA (in other words, to bring you up to the entry requirement before starting the program). The art history faculty emphasizes that graduate study in art history requires extensive reading, research, analysis, and writing. Adequate preparation in these skills is essential for successful completion of the certificate program. If one's experience with art history isn't recent, the applicant should consult with the certificate coordinator to see whether (a) refresher course(s) can be added to the program of study.
