The School of Art offers many competitive scholarships for undergraduate students. These scholarships are made possible through generous ENDOWMENTS that have been established in the School of Art and in the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts through generous gifts and grants received from donors from throughout the United States and the Helen Jones Foundation of Lubbock, Texas.

Competitive Talent-Based Scholarships for Incoming Students

These scholarships are awarded to entering first-year and transfer students based on portfolio or essay evaluations made by the Foundations Committee submitted in  STEP 2 of your INCOMING STUDENT APPLICATION. Scholarships can range in value from $6,000 to $1,000.

 

INCOMING FIRST-YEAR AND TRANSFER STUDENTS

To be considered for scholarships in the School of Art you must complete STEP 2 of the INCOMING STUDENT APPLICATION. 

Incoming First-Year and Transfer Students may also apply for the financial need-based Wendell B. Price Memorial Scholarship, one of the scholarships established under the  H.Y. Price, Jr. Scholarship Endowment. Mr. Price established the endowment, in memory of his son, who lost his life in an airplane accident in 1960, to support students in art and music.  Mr. Price wanted these scholarships to enable undergraduate men and women of good character and ability to attend Texas Tech University who otherwise would be denied this opportunity for lack of financial means. Art and Music students entering the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual & Performing Arts are eligible to apply.

For consideration, applicants must also have completed a free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) online application.

Continuing Undergraduate Art Majors with degree emphases in Art Education, Art History, Graphic Design, Studio Art (all areas) may apply for Talent-Based and Need-Based scholarships.

Continuing Junior and Senior Art Majors may also apply for the School of Art Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship. This competitive, merit-based award recognizes a School of Art student's accomplishments beyond his or her specific area of specialization. It seeks to encourage students' efforts to excel in all the fields of study they consider while at the School of Art. It is awarded to a student whose academic record and portfolio of work attests/demonstrates exceptional work ethic and higher than common expectations, which are invaluable assets in professional life and for those thinking of pursuing graduate studies.

DRAWING SCHOLARSHIPS are available to Continuing Undergraduate Art Majors from all areas in School of Art.

Real and Muff Musgrave – Medici Circle Art Scholarship

Real & Muff Musgrave established the endowment for this scholarship in 2012 to provide a scholarship which "shall be awarded on a merit/needs basis to a student, in good academic standing (with at least a 3.0 GPA in a 4.0 system in art curriculum), who has completed two years in undergraduate work (any area) in the School of Art and has demonstrated high proficiency in drawing, as judged by the SOA Scholarship Committee. The award shall be renewable for one year, so long as the student has maintained an overall academic standing of 3.0 GPA or higher in a 4.0 system for the preceding year. It is the intent of the principal benefactors that special consideration and encouragement be given to a third year art student [beginning 3rd year of studies] with demonstrated drawing ability, who is pursuing a degree with the goal to derive the bulk of their income from the creation of their art. And that student shall have this support available for their final two years of undergraduate study." Juniors (or seniors who anticipate taking two years before graduating) may apply. the Musgrave-Medici Circle Scholarship will be $4,000 in 2021-2022, renewable the following year in the same amount.

Cheatham/Howze Endowed Drawing Scholarship

Established 2003 by Paul D. Hanna of Lubbock for the purpose of honoring former Art Department faculty members Frank Cheatham and Jim Howze this scholarship supports "undergraduate students who are art majors [classified as] sophomores, juniors, or transfer senior students without sufficient art hours, who have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and demonstrate proficient artistic skills through their portfolios." The Cheatham/Howze Scholarship scholarship will be in the amount of $1,500 in 2024-2025.

Donna Howell-Sickles & John Sickles – Medici Circle Art Scholarship

Established by School of Art alumna Donna Howell-Sickles and her husband, John, in 2014, this endowment provides "merit based scholarships that will benefit any junior level students within the School of Art, regardless of specialization, who has some level of focus on drawing. The recipient must also have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0."
