Editor-in-chief of The Daily Toreador honored for exceptional impact on campus and student media
Jacob Lujan, a senior creative media industries major in the College of Media & Communication at Texas Tech University, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Brent Ross Fearless Champion Award.
Each year, the Texas Tech Alumni Association (TTAA) presents this honor to an undergraduate student who truly represents what it means to be a Red Raider, someone who leads with integrity, uplifts others, and makes a lasting impact on the campus community. This year, that recognition goes to Jacob, whose leadership and dedication have made him a standout voice among his peers.
As editor-in-chief of The Daily Toreador, Jacob has helped guide the universitys student newspaper through a historic milestone, its 100th year in publication. Reaching a century of continuous coverage is no small feat, and under Jacobs leadership, the publication has honored its legacy while continuing to evolve in a digital age. His role during this centennial year reflects a deep respect for tradition paired with a clear vision for the future of student journalism.
The award is named in memory of Brent Ross, a Texas Tech alumnus and former associate vice president of marketing for the TTAA. Brent passed away in 2017 after a long and courageous battle with metastatic melanoma. During his time as a student, he served as a reporter and sports editor for The University Daily, now known as The Daily Toreador, and was involved in many aspects of campus life, from the Goin Band from Raiderland to intramural sports. He is remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for the energy he brought to every room.
To honor Brents legacy, the TTAA, with support from the Texas Tech Credit Union, presents the Brent Ross Fearless Champion Award each year at A Matador Evening. The award includes a $1,000 scholarship for the recipient, along with a $1,000 donation to the scholarship fund in Brents memory. Its both a recognition of excellence and an investment in students who are continuing to make a difference.
Jacobs journey at Texas Tech reflects a deep love for the university and a drive to contribute in meaningful ways. His leadership in student journalism during such a milestone year shows a passion for service and storytelling that leaves a mark far beyond the newsroom.
The Brent Ross Fearless Champion Award is a celebration of what impact one student can make, and Jacob Lujan carries that legacy forward with pride.
