Senior digital media & professional communication major Tara Walsh recognized for her leadership and impact at the College of Media & Communication.
Tara Walsh, a senior digital media & professional communication major with a certificate in conference and wedding planning from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, will cross the stage at Texas Tech University as the summer 2026 Banner Bearer for the College of Media & Communication (CoMC).
During her time at Texas Tech, Walsh served as a student recruitment assistant for the college, worked as an account manager and account coordinator for RaiderComm, co-hosted a show on KTXT-FM, and mentored students through the Peer Co. mentorship program.
A third-generation Red Raider, Walsh always considered Texas Tech her second home.
After transferring from North Central Texas College, where she originally planned
to study business and psychology, Walsh toured the College of Media & Communication
and immediately knew she had found the right place. What stood out most to her was
the college's emphasis on real-world experience from day one.
"As a transfer student, I wanted a college where I could immediately apply what I
was learning, and CoMC exceeded every expectation," Walsh said.
When she transferred, Walsh told Lori Jones, unit manager for student success, that
she wanted to make the most of her time at the college. That conversation led to her
role as a student recruitment assistant and opened doors she never expected.
Through RaiderComm, the college's student-run public relations firm, her study abroad
and intern experience in Ireland, and her work as a student recruitment assistant,
Walsh discovered a passion for digital media, communication, and event planning. Some
of Walsh's favorite memories at Texas Tech included her time abroad, working the Dean's
Student Ambassador leadership dinners, and welcoming new students during Red Raider
Orientation.
"Those experiences allowed me to meet incredible people while creating meaningful moments for future Red Raiders," Walsh said.
Walsh now serves as the section coordinator at Texas Tech DFW, where she supports event operations, marketing, and community outreach. She plans to continue building her personal brand through content creation, manage larger marketing initiatives, and return to Ireland to relive the unforgettable experience made possible through the college.
Walsh said the college gave her far more than a degree. Through internships, student
employment, and mentorship opportunities, she developed practical skills in communication,
marketing, event coordination, and leadership that she uses in her current role. She
also credited the college with teaching her the importance of building relationships
and encouraging her to say "yes" to new opportunities.
Walsh said her advice for current students is to "introduce yourself, build relationships
with faculty and staff, and say yes to new opportunities. You never know where one
conversation might lead.”
