After 27 years of dedicated service to Texas Tech University, Chris Cook is retiring after a career that has left a lasting mark on students, colleagues and the university community.
Chris began his Red Raider journey in collegiate athletics, spending 17 years in the field, including 11 years at Texas Tech. During that time, he worked alongside legendary football coach Mike Leach for ten seasons.
He later served as senior director of the Office of Communications & Marketing for
11 years, helping tell the university's story and elevate its brand through strategic
communications and marketing initiatives. He also co-created the "Communicators in
a Cart" video series alongside Texas Tech Public Media, giving students, alumni and
communication leaders an opportunity to share their stories while offering viewers
an inside look at their lives and careers.
Chris eventually joined the College of Media & Communication, where he served as assistant
dean for enrollment management and marketing for nearly three years. During his time
with the college, he helped launch the "It's Your Turn" branding campaign, which strengthened
recruitment efforts and expanded the college's visibility.
As an assistant professor of practice in public relations, Chris brought decades of
professional experience into the classroom. Throughout his time at Texas Tech, he
taught more than 4,000 students, sharing real-world lessons that helped prepare them
for careers in the communications industry. Through his mentorship, leadership and
commitment to experiential learning, he inspired generations of students while making
a lasting impact on the College of Media & Communication. Earlier this year, his dedication
to teaching was recognized with a Professing Excellence Award from University Student
Housing.
Reflecting on his time as a faculty member, Chris said, "One of the most important
lessons I've learned as a faculty member is that teaching students is the least I
can do. I have the opportunity to share experiences and lessons from my career that
can help prepare them for what's ahead. If those stories have provided confidence
or guidance, then I've done something meaningful. In return, I've discovered there
is no greater reward than when a student seeks your advice because they value your
perspective. Those moments are among the most gratifying of my career."
Whether on the sidelines, leading university communications, building the College
of Media & Communication's brand or mentoring students in the classroom, Chris built
a legacy centered on service, relationships and preparing others for success.
As Chris begins this well-earned retirement, the College of Media & Communication
extends its sincere gratitude for his 27 years of service and the countless students,
colleagues and alumni whose lives he has influenced along the way.
