Professor Spotlight: Bill Dean, Ed.D.

Bill Dean, Ed.D.
One professor who has a long history with the College of Media & Communication is
Bill Dean, Ed.D. He has been teaching at Texas Tech University for 44 years. For 33 years, he also
has served as the executive vice president for the Texas Tech Alumni Association.
“I enjoy teaching primarily because I love working with students. It keeps me young
and on top of things,” Dean said.
A Lubbock native, Dean attended Texas Tech where he earned a bachelor's degree in
marketing with a minor in journalism, and he played baseball for the university. After graduating in 1962, he began teaching
at Lubbock High School and later taught at Coronado High School. He earned his master's
degree in education, then he was hired at Texas Tech and continued to pursue his doctorate.
Dean has seen many positive changes in the College of Media & Communication during
his time at Texas Tech.
“I'd say probably the biggest change I've seen in the college was going from the
old building and moving into the new one. It tripled the amount of space we have to operate in, we have state-of-the-art lab facilities and practically anything we could want,” Dean said. Through the many changes, Dean
said, “One thing remains the same. The faculty care tremendously about their students and that will never change.”
Dean is passionate about teaching and the College of Media & Communication at Texas
Tech.
“I believe this is a great college and a terrific place to earn an undergraduate
degree.”

Group of 2013 Scholarship Recipients
That exciting time has come for incoming students to begin the college application
process. On top of visiting various campuses and applying to your top schools, now
is the time for scholarship applications as well.
Scholarships and grants are types of financial aid that do not have to be repaid. They may take the form of university scholarships,
federal or state grants, or outside scholarships. The College of Media & Communication
offers a variety of undergraduate scholarships.
Senior business assistant Rebecca Kibitlewski said the college has 90 undergraduate scholarships, some of which are awarded to
more than one student. The deadline for current and incoming students is Feb. 1, but
the priority deadline is Dec. 15. The deadline for transfer students is March 1. The
Texas Tech University application for scholarships and financial aid opens Oct. 1,
and thereafter students can begin applying for scholarships.
“Whenever students actually apply for the College of Media & Communication, the scholarships
are included,” Kibitlewski said. When students indicate which college they are applying
to through Apply Texas, they are automatically put in the pool for scholarships.

Kibitlewski said that the scholarship committee meets in the spring to make its selections,
and she notifies the students in April. She sends out an email, along with an official
letter, stating which scholarship has been awarded to the student. The email includes
a link to the acceptance agreement, and along with completing the agreement, the student
will write a thank you letter to their donor. These are the two steps that must be
completed in order to receive the scholarship. Each fall, the college has a luncheon
to award these scholarships to the students, providing an opportunity for students
to thank donors in attendance.
“I would suggest getting a letter of recommendation, either from a teacher or someone
from a high school program,” said Kibitlewski. “We sometimes go off of GPA, what area
you are from, or financial need, so definitely fill out your Free Application for
Federal Student Aid, as well.”
