Reaching Audiences: Media Management & Big Data Analytics

Greg Lowe Professor of Media Management at the University of Tampere in Finland, Greg is also President of the European Media Management Association (2012-2016) and Continuity Director of RIPE, an international initiative focused on developing research and practice in public service media for the 21st century.

Greg established the Graduate Studies Program in Media Management in Tampere in 2008, the first of its kind in Finland. His students are a blending of recent university graduates and older professionals returning for a higher degree, mainly at the master's level but there are also Ph.D. students that he supervises. The program is international with students from around the world (e.g. Austria, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China, Finland, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Spain, Russia, the UK, the USA and Vietnam).

He founded the RIPE initiative in 2000, among the first and most persistent international efforts to link scholars and managers in the public media sector. The acronym stands for Re-visionary Interpretations of the Public Enterprise in media (www.ripeat.org). The biennial series of conferences has been sponsored by leading public media firms around the world, i.e. YLE in Finland (2002), DR in Denmark ( 2004), NOS in the Netherlands (2006), ZDF in Germany (2008), the BBC in England (2010), the ABC in Australia (2012) and NHK in Japan (2014). The 2016 conference will take place in Antwerp and is sponsored by VRT Belgium. Greg has edited or co-edited a related series of books published by NORDICOM at the University of Gothenborg in Sweden (http://www.nordicom.gu.se/en), which are widely referenced and include many of the most important thinkers in this research field. He is currently co-editing the seventh book in the series, with a focus on Crossing Boundaries & Borders in Public Service Media. It will publish in late 2015 or early 2016.

Greg is President of the European Media Management Association, the first incorporated academic association in the field and a pioneer community in the emerging discipline. He is co-editor of a forthcoming book on Managing Media Firms and Industries: What's so special about media management? It will publish in August 2015 from Springer Scientific.
