A professor in the Texas Tech University College of Education recently launched a first-of-its-kind academic journal focused on foster care research, The Journal of Foster Care (JFC).

JFC is a peer-reviewed, open access, online publication encompassing all areas of foster care, kinship care and other non-parental custodial environments. The journal has no publication fees. Once accepted and copyedited, articles will be immediately made available to the public.

The publication accepts manuscripts in the areas of health, education, psychology, counseling, treatment, abuse and neglect, transition, legal, policy, career, parental education and training, and outcomes.

Daniel Kelly, assistant professor of instructional technology in the Department of Educational Psychology and Leadership, is the publication's founder and editor-in-chief, and as a child lived in the foster care system in New York.

"Although there are academic journals that focus on issues common to those faced by children in foster care, no scholarly journal existed in the U.S. with a specific focus on the foster care system," Kelly said. "The Journal of Foster Care was established to fill that gap and create awareness of the needs of this system and population of children with a holistic approach."

Faculty members from the College of Education and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center form the journal's editorial board:

  • Editor-in-Chief Daniel Kelly - assistant professor, Texas Tech University College of Education
  • Managing Editor Ugochi Iwuji - doctoral student, Texas Tech University College of Education
  • Jennifer Collins - assistant professor, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
