Patriann Smith, an assistant professor of language, diversity and literacy studies in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been named a 2019 Integrated Scholar by the Texas Tech University Office of the Provost.

The award honors faculty members who demonstrate significant accomplishments and effective synergy among teaching, research and service. Smith and five others were selected for the honor from a university-wide pool of nominees.

"Each of these faculty members has infused the results of their scholarship and creative activity into the learning experiences they provide to students and their service and engagement activities," Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Galyean said.

A profile and video about each of this year's Integrated Scholars will be published later in the year on the provost website. Previous Integrated Scholar profiles can be viewed at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/provost/scholars/index.php.

Smith's work addresses the ways in which cross-cultural and cross-linguistic challenges faced by immigrant students, teachers and educators can be taken into account in literacy teaching, learning and assessment.
