Frank McDonald began his legal career in the Tyler Court of Appeals. He transitioned to his first oil and gas venture as a shareholder with Kliewer and Hood, P.C. Ten years later, he joined Grace Energy Corporation as Senior Counsel. In 1993, Frank was hired by XTO Energy and served as senior vice president, general counsel, and assistant secretary over 20 years. He led his legal team in the $4.2 billion acquisition of Hunt Petroleum Corporation and related companies. Totaling $11 billion, this was the largest upstream transaction in 2008. Frank and his team managed the comprehensive due diligence efforts, the national and international regulatory approval processes, completed a securities registration for the shares of XTO, and closed debt issuance to finance the transaction. They skillfully negotiated a purchase price paid in the form of 2.3 million shares of XTO common stock and $2.6 billion. Frank oversaw the issuance of $4.25 billion in senior notes which ensured financing for the entire project. Frank's involvement with Texas Tech Law has continued since his graduation. After years of planning, he assisted in the creation of the Energy Law Advisory Group, which provides students interested in mineral, natural resources, and environmental issues real-world experience. In 2013, he established the Frank McDonald Endowed Professorship, which is currently held by Professor Eric Chiappinelli. Frank retired in 2013 and lives in Colleyville.
