Dr. Ivy Walz is the Associate Dean for Faculty, Research, Creativity, & Outreach at the J.T. & Margaret Talkington College of Visual and Performing Arts at Texas Tech. She is also Associate Professor of Voice in the Texas Tech School of Music. She seeks to build bridges through servant leadership, teaching, and performing, striving to foster a joy-filled learning environment that encompasses the development of skill, self-expression, and artistry.
An overview of her responsibilities includes supporting faculty through facilitating research, collaboration, and granting opportunities, serving on engaged college initiatives across community outreach, engagement, and engaged scholarship, supporting tenure and promotion trajectories, and supporting arts-accreditation for each of the Schools of the College. She also supports students in areas of scholarships, fellowships, and research and creative activity awards.
Dr. Ivy Walz is a distinguished mezzo-soprano who has performed with the Spoleto Festival, Cincinnati Opera, Syracuse Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Resonance Works, and Tri-Cities Opera. Concert soloist engagements have been with the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, Akron Symphony, Symphoria, the Binghamton Philharmonic, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony. A dedicated scholar of art song, she has been invited to perform at prestigious venues and festivals including the International Music by Women Festival, Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar, Finger Lakes Chamber Ensemble, SongFest, Cincinnati Song Initiative, Denver Art Song Project, Civic Morning Musicals, and Middlebury Song Fest. She is particularly recognized for her specialization in contemporary works by living composers, a focus that permeates her recital programs.
With over twenty-five years of experience, Dr. Ivy Walz is a vocal educator dedicated to teaching all learners who long to sing. She is experienced at teaching classical and a wide variety of contemporary singing styles. She incorporates integrative pedagogies and approaches towards development of techniques that support longevity, artistry, joy, and wellbeing. She served on the voice faculties at Ithaca College, the State University of New York at Cortland, and Cornell University. Her students have gone on to top graduate programs, are currently teaching in k-12 and community arts programs and are thriving in meaningful careers.
Dr. Ivy Walz holds the BM ('98) in Music Education and Performance, MM ('02) in Vocal Performance from Ithaca College, and the DMA ('14) in Voice Performance with a cognate in Vocal Pedagogy from the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.
