Melanie Escalante, a senior Journalism major and first-generation student from Dallas, Texas, is someone who is eager for change and is driven by a thirst for knowledge. With a relentless pursuit of academic excellence and a fervent desire to make a difference, Escalante seeks to not only uplift her own circumstances but also inspire others in similar situations. Whether through mentorship programs, academic advising, or student organizations, she has found avenues to seek guidance and build connections.

As an active Dean's Student Ambassador (DSA) for the College of Media & Communication (CoMC), Escalante is fueled by a passion for storytelling and a drive to amplify marginalized voices. She navigates the world of media with tenacity and purpose. As she delves into reporting and features that shed light on social issues, she hopes to ignite empathy and provoke meaningful dialogue among her peers and the broader population.

Being someone who identifies as a Mexican American woman, I have always seen the importance of all people feeling included, being seen, and having their voices heard.

“My beat has always been more geared toward the community and issues with diversity, equity and inclusion,” said Escalante. “Those have always been topics that have sparked an interest in me. Being someone who identifies as a Mexican American woman, I have always seen the importance of all people feeling included, being seen, and having their voices heard. Coming into college, I had that goal of wanting to be a voice for others and sharing their [stories].”

With an unwavering level of support provided by CoMC's faculty and staff members, Escalante is inspired by those who she's familiarized herself with in her home away from home.

“The DSA advisors— Brooke Galvan and Hope Henderson— have been extremely important in my academic success,” said Escalante. “They have been the most consistent in my life and they are always there for me every day of the week. I am also very grateful for Dr. Peaslee, Dr. Sternadori, and Professor Holt. They have sent many opportunities my way and have also been kind enough to check in on me— I've been in constant communication with them despite not always [being enrolled in their courses].”

“The things that I'm doing in the College of Media & Communication are going to be directly beneficial to my community and other minorities,” said Escalante.

Poised to challenge the status quo and usher in a new era of progress, Escalante views her journey in CoMC as one that will ultimately impact those who surround her more than anything.

“The things that I'm doing in the College of Media & Communication are going to be directly beneficial to my community and other minorities,” said Escalante. “People with similar backgrounds as me could see they are also able to do something they love and be successful at it. Others could effectively tell someone else's story, voice their opinion, and bring attention to topics that many do not like to discuss.”

Escalante now stands tall with pride as she reflects on her decision to pursue a degree in higher education. With each step taken in the halls of CoMC, she carries the hopes and dreams of her family, celebrating the significance of her journey as a beacon of progress and achievement.

“I've learned to take opportunities and not to be scared to lack experience,” said Escalante. “Being a DSA also gave me more confidence to having close relationships with others in CoMC— even with faculty and staff. These same relationships are what helped get me to where I am today. Having connections in this building is where my support came from and my inspiration to take advantage of what is offered to me.”
