Lubbock, Texas, is located in far West Texas about midway between Dallas, Texas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. Approximately a quarter of a million people live in or around Lubbock, which is home to Texas Tech University, Lubbock Christian University, South Plains College, and Wayland Baptist University. Cultural events and sporting activities from these institutions enrich the lives of West Texans, who also enjoy the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and the Ballet Lubbock, as well as many community theaters, concerts, chorales, and numerous other social activities. Lubbock International Airport provides convenient transportation in and out of the region.
Lubbock is actually one of the oldest continually inhabited areas of North America. The Lubbock Lake Landmark, a designated National Historic and State Archeological Landmark that draws archaeologists and students from around the world, contains evidence of habitation by a variety of peoples on the Southern High Plains for the past 11,500 years.
The West Texas climate is semiarid, pleasantly cool on summer nights and relatively mild in winter. Cotton farms, cattle ranches, and oil wells can be seen throughout West Texas, although technology and health care also contribute significantly to the local economy.
More than 30,000 students attend Texas Tech University, which was founded in 1923. The Texas Tech University School of Law and the Texas Tech University School of Medicine are part of the Lubbock campus, as well as the Graduate School, the College of Agriculture, the College of Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the Honors College, the College of Human Sciences, the Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration, and the College of Visual and Performing Arts. The College of Visual & Performing Arts comprises Art, Music, and Theatre programs, in addition to the doctoral program in Fine Arts that began in 1972. The arts also are featured at Texas Tech University's hill-country campus at Junction, TX.
