SFS is a VIP, invitation only, cohort-based admission program for academically excellent, currently enrolled Red Raiders.

Do I apply to be in the SFS Program?

No, SFS is an invitation-only admission program that does not require an application. SFS invitees must accept the Honors College's invitation to be part of SFS by the deadline included in the invitation letter.

Do I have to change my major?

No! The Honors College serves all majors. Our goal is to help you navigate Honors without adding time to your degree.

What are the requirements for SFS?

After accepting the invitation from Honors to be part of SFS, during the SFS semester, students will attend three required academic sessions, meet with the Honors SFS Advisor to plan coursework, and participate in four Honors College events. If these SFS requirements are met, students will earn their first 3 semester credit hours (SCH) of Honors coursework, can compete for Honors scholarships, and register for Honors seminars and HE+ sections of courses!

What are the academic sessions?

The academic sessions help us build community among SFS cohorts, learn the history of the Honors College, dive deep into the College's four Core Values, and begin to connect with Honors Houses and student organizations.

What are the benefits of SFS?

In addition to immediate membership in the Honors College (and all the benefits of being in the Honors College), those who finish the SFS requirements earn 3 SCH of Honors credit and compete for a scholarship that is reserved for students in the SFS program!

I have accepted my invitation; am I in the Honors College?

YES! Welcome to Honors! We're excited to welcome you into our community this semester, and you will have access to our faculty and staff as you navigate your SFS requirements this term. Upon successful completion of your SFS semester, you'll be able to immediately join us in Honors seminars, Study Abroad or Research Away trips, internships, Undergraduate Research, etc.

Why is the program called the "San Francisco Scholars" Program?

SFS is named after Honors College Emeritus Dean Michael San Francisco, the beloved second dean of the Honors College, who joined the faculty of Texas Tech in 1990 as an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences. During his tenure at Tech, Dr. San Francisco served in many administrative roles, including as interim Vice President for Research and interim Dean of Arts & Sciences. Dr,. San Francisco's heart is to serve students and to create community among scholars. SFS was designed to do both, and students who become San Francisco Scholars are encouraged to lead and serve together.
