Dr. Bob Lawless

About Our Namesake 

Bob Lawless

Dr. Bob Lawless' academic career spanned 32 years as a faculty member and administrator. He was on the faculty at Texas A&M University, the University of Houston, and Texas Tech University. Dr. Lawless earned a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Houston and a Ph.D, in Industrial Engineering (Operations Research) from Texas A&M University.

 

Dr. Lawless' experience included sixteen years in the private sector, nine with Monsanto and seven with Southwest Airlines, initially as Vice President for Finance and CFO, and the last four as Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer (COO).

 

He held administrative positions at the University of Houston and served as President of Texas Tech University and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center from 1989-1996. From 1996-2004, he was President of The University of Tulsa where he was named President Emeritus in 2004.

 
It was during Dr. Lawless' tenure as President of Texas Tech University that the Honors Program grew. Dr. Lawless lives by the adage, "To thine own self be true," which perfectly fits the Honors ideal of Integrity - and the House that bears the name LAWLESS!
