Dr. Fabio Augustinis, a dynamic figure encompassing roles as a drummer, percussionist,
educator, composer, and producer, currently serves as Assistant Professor of Practice
in Commercial Music and Jazz Studies at Texas Tech University, where he also coordinates
the Commercial Music programs. Before this role, he was a Lecturer in Jazz Drum Set
at The University of Texas at Austin, where he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts
degree after earning degrees in music from The University of Iowa and State University
of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.
Renowned for his expertise, Dr. Augustinis has presented at esteemed conferences such
as the Jazz Education Network (JEN) International Conference and the International
Society of Jazz Arrangers and Composers (ISJAC) Symposium. He has also been a featured
soloist, guest artist, and clinician at the Gene Harris Jazz Festival at Boise State
University in Idaho.
Dr. Augustinis was the recipient of the Eleanor Stribling Award for Excellence in
Jazz Studies in November of 2020 at the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music. His
versatile artistry extends to approximately 30 commercially released albums across
jazz, "Latin," and commercial music genres.
As an educator, he has conducted masterclasses at renowned institutions including
the University of Miami – Frost School of Music, College Conservatory of Music in
Cincinnati, The University of Iowa, and several prestigious Brazilian universities.
His performance career includes professional and academic collaborations with artists
such as Jiggs Wigham, Steve Davis, Joe Lovano, Ernie Watts, Brian Lynch, Steven Feifke,
Benny Bennack III, Nailor Azevedo, Lea Freire, Teco Cardoso, André Marques (Hermeto
Pascoal), and many others. Notable soloist engagements include performances with the
Juneau Symphony Orchestra, Campinas Jazz Big Band, and the Symphony Orchestra of Campinas,
Brazil.
Dr. Augustinis has also contributed to the field as a published author, with his article
on drummer and educator Alan Dawson featured in Percussive Notes, the official journal
of the Percussive Arts Society. Additionally, his debut album, "Sunrise," showcased
his talents as a composer with original compositions and arrangements.
