Dr. Joel E. Pagán serves as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Athletic Bands at Texas Tech University, where he directs the nationally recognized Goin’ Band from Raiderland, conducts the Concert Band, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education and band pedagogy. Before joining Texas Tech University in 2017, Dr. Pagán spent two decades as a successful public school music educator and band director in Florida. His ensembles earned regional and national recognition, including an invited performance at the Music for All National Concert Band Festival.
Dr. Pagán earned the Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of South Florida, the Master of Music Education from Florida State University, and the Bachelor of Science in Education with a concentration in Music Education from Western Carolina University. His research interests include student engagement, music learning, educational psychology, and music teacher preparation. He has presented research and professional development sessions at state, regional, and national conferences, including those of the Texas Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association, and NAfME Music Research and Teacher Education National Conference. He remains committed to developing future music educators while fostering excellence in both concert and athletic band traditions.
As Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Pagán oversees all aspects of the Goin’ Band from Raiderland, leading performances at major bowl games, conference championships, and national events. Under his leadership, the ensemble has appeared in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, performed at multiple college football bowl games, and served as an invited exhibition ensemble for the UIL State 6A Marching Band Contest. Additionally, he oversees the Court Jesters Basketball Band, which performs at home basketball games and travels to the Big 12 and NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.
An active conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, Dr. Pagán regularly works with honor bands and school music programs throughout Texas and beyond. His professional contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the Florida Music Education Association Distinguished Service Award and the Association for Women in Communications Headliner Award. He maintains professional memberships in the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi.
