JOUR 4301: Journalism, Borderlands and Border Crossings

The Maymester in Marfa and Junction is a transcultural, multimedia production course that will focus on journalistic reporting of migration, human and drug-trafficking, human rights, the environment, agriculture, and the arts in the borderlands between the United States and Mexico.

Students and faculty will reside at the campus in Junction, Texas, and will travel to border posts and places of journalistic interes in Marfa, Presidio, Eagle Pass, Quemado, Del Rio, Socorro, and El Paso, Texas, to produce programs as part of their journalism education. They will hold a workshop with Mexican and American journalists from the borderlands, visit border crossings, border communities, immigration centers, and interview U.S Immigration and Border Patrol Officers, local law enforcement, migrants, as well as residents of the borderlands, for purposes of producing multi-media stories and narratives for media outlets in real space and online.

The course has a research component that focuses on freedom of expression, human rights, and journalistic reporting on the borderlands between the United States and Mexico.
