Roger A. '76 and Ann Key
Roger embodied a lifetime of service, leadership, and deep commitment to the legal profession and to Texas Tech Law. A third-generation lawyer, he began his career practicing alongside his father—continuing a remarkable legacy of more than 100 years of Key attorneys in Texas and guided by the values instilled by his father and grandfather: hard work, honesty, diligence, and integrity.
A partner at Key, Terrell & Seger, LLP, Roger became known for his expertise in business and transactional law, but even more for his integrity, steadiness, and genuine care for people. With a wealth of experience and a true passion for the law, he established himself as a trusted advocate in the local legal community. His colleagues often described him as a voice of reason, a consensus-builder, and a gracious mentor who elevated everyone around him.
In addition to his extensive legal knowledge, Roger was known for his compassionate and personalized approach to each case. He took the time to listen to his clients, understand their unique circumstances, and tailor his legal strategies to their specific needs. His clients appreciate his attention to detail, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to protecting their rights and best interests.
Rogers impact extended far beyond his practice. He served in leadership roles across the profession, including director of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, president of the Lubbock County Bar Association, president of the Texas Association of Bank Counsel, and chair of the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors. His service continued well into recent years, including co-chairing the State Bar Workgroup on Texas Lawyer Needs during the 2020 pandemic and 2021 winter storm—work that helped attorneys across the state navigate extraordinary challenges.
At Texas Tech Law, Roger was a devoted and generous champion. He led the Texas Tech Law School Foundation Board as president and remained a beloved and influential member for decades. He offered steady leadership, thoughtful counsel, and an unwavering belief in investing in future generations. Roger supported a wide range of initiatives that strengthened the school and expanded opportunities for students, including general scholarships, endowed professorships, and memorial endowments honoring colleagues and friends. In 2020, he and his wife, Ann, established the Roger A. and Ann Key Endowed Scholarship in Banking, Business, and Commercial Law—supporting students with the same dedication and encouragement that defined Rogers own career.
Whether guiding young lawyers, strengthening the bar, or serving his alma mater, Roger approached every role with humility, heart, and a deep belief in the power of the legal profession to make lives better. He found joy in hunting, golf, and time spent with his family—but his greatest pride was his life with Ann, whom he adored.
Roger Keys legacy will continue to shape Texas Tech Law for generations. His leadership, generosity, and example remind us what it means to serve with purpose, kindness, and quiet excellence.
