Following graduation from Texas Tech School of Law he began practice in Lubbock, Texas and spent the next 21 years in private practice. His private practice experience included both Criminal and family law, with an emphasis on representing citizens accused of committing criminal offenses.

In the Spring of 2015, McDonald began as a Fellow in the Clinical Program, assisting and mentoring students with their clients.
