LUBBOCK, TX — The School of Art at Texas Tech University is proud to present LEGACY: Printmaking Alumni from the Lynwood A. Kreneck Years, an exhibition celebrating the enduring influence of master printmaker and educator Lynwood A. Kreneck. On view from February 5 through March 7, 2026, in the Landmark Arts Gallery, the exhibition brings together works by 29 alumni who studied with Kreneck during his tenure at Texas Tech University from 1975 to 2005.
LEGACY highlights a remarkable collection of prints and related works that reflect the technical rigor, conceptual depth, and experimental spirit fostered in Krenecks printmaking studios. Spanning nearly four decades of alumni, the exhibition demonstrates the wide range of artistic approaches that emerged from his teaching—while revealing a shared foundation rooted in craftsmanship, critical thinking, and an enduring commitment to the medium of printmaking.
Lynwood A. Krenecks impact on the School of Art extends far beyond the classroom. Known for his dedication to both traditional and innovative print processes, Kreneck emphasized discipline, collaboration, and intellectual curiosity. His teaching shaped generations of artists who continue to contribute to the field as practicing artists, educators, and cultural leaders across the country and beyond.
Today, the legacy of Krenecks pedagogy lives on through the work of his former students. Their practices reflect not only the technical mastery he championed, but also the adaptability and relevance of printmaking in contemporary art discourse. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view these connections across time, highlighting how a shared educational lineage continues to inform artistic practice decades later.
“Lynwood Kreneck took a chance on me, accepting me into the graduate school.” Catherine Prose, MFA alumna, 2000, said. “When I landed my first teaching role at Midwestern State University in 2005, Lynwood and Eleonor [artist and wife] were my steadfast cheerleaders. I will forever be grateful to Lynwood for believing in me and giving me that initial chance.”
Catherine went on to say; “Like many other printmakers who had the opportunity to work with Lynwood, he fundamentally changed how we approached non-toxic water-based screen-printing in our own work and teaching.”
In conjunction with LEGACY, a second exhibition—The Lynwood A. Kreneck Tribute Exhibition—will be on view in the South Gallery. This complementary exhibition presents a comprehensive survey of Krenecks own work, spanning more than 40 years of artistic practice. Together, the two exhibitions offer a layered perspective on Krenecks influence, pairing the work of his former students with the evolution of his personal artistic vision.
John Hitchcock, MFA alumni, 1997 reflected on his experience remembering, “Under his [Lynwoods] mentorship, I learned how to organize a professional print exhibition by assisting with ColorPrint USA and was introduced to safer, innovative water-based screenprinting techniques.” He would go on to say, “I was inspired to merge traditional printmaking concepts with unconventional methods to develop large-scale print installations. Lynwood set high standards for professionalism and kept us alert with his quick, sharp sense of humor.”
Extending the celebration beyond the gallery, a special community event will take place on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Charles Adams Studio Project, Print Studio. The evening, part of the First Friday Art Trail, will feature interactive printmaking demonstrations led by Texas Tech School of Art alumni Catherine Prose and John Hitchcock. Through hands-on engagement and public demonstrations, Prose and Hitchcock continue the pedagogical spirit of Lynwood A. Kreneck by sharing printmaking knowledge and creative inquiry with the Lubbock community, reinforcing the lasting impact of his teaching beyond the university.
A closing reception for both exhibitions will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Landmark Arts Gallery. All events are free and open to the public.
