Global Exchange Research Seed Grants– ITAs

International Affairs is proud to announce the newest iteration of our international seed grants.  The Global Exchange Research Seed Grants-In the Americas (ITAs) support faculty with peer collaborators at select institutions within the Americas and the Caribbean to conduct research that addresses global challenges, addressing one or more of the UN Sustainability Goals. Applicants may request seed funding of up to $3,500 to propose a new research project with a peer collaborator at selected international institutions. Research projects should serve to strengthen TTU’s partnerships with leading institutions located within the Americas and the Caribbean.

Projects including one or more UN Sustainable Development Goals, https://sdgs.un.org/, will be prioritized, as willl engaged scholarship projects.

The universities listed below may host TTU researchers for site visits aimed at exploring potential research collaborations. Institutions marked with an asterisk (*) may also offer matching funds to support a reciprocal visit by one of their researchers to TTU.

*CATIE - Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, Costa Rica

CATIE (Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza in Costa Rica) is a regional academic center for innovation and sustainable development in agriculture, management, conservation, and sustainable use of natural resources. CATIE has strong international ties and seeks to increase sustainable and inclusive human well-being in Latin American and the Caribbean through graduate education, impact-oriented research, and technical cooperation and dissemination of knowledge.

FUAA - Andea Area University Foundation, Colombia

The Fundación Universitaria del Área Andina is a multi-campus institution with a presence in three cities in Colombia: Bogotá, Pereira, and Valledupar. From this territorial perspective, the institution promotes research with a regional focus, aimed at understanding and providing solutions to the problems of the country.

Currently, the institution has 28 research groups, which bring together the nine faculties and various areas of knowledge, including: health, administrative sciences, law, social and human sciences, engineering, basic sciences, education, design, and communication.

The groups develop their work along three main lines:

  1. Technological development and innovation: in this area, social and technological innovation projects are carried out. Some notable examples are: the design and implementation of an irrigation system for coffee crops in an indigenous community in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta; the creation of a device to measure the radiation absorbed by radiology service providers; and the development of a visual model that allows people with hearing disabilities to drive a car.
  2. Formative project. Here, the active participation of students as research assistants is promoted, strengthening their academic and professional training. Relevant projects include: a seedbed aimed at the employability and entrepreneurship of young people in a rural municipality of the country, and the construction of a transmedia resource for mental health communication, conceived as a tool for peacebuilding.
  3. Applied projects. This line focuses on one- to two-year research projects with a direct impact on different social sectors. Among the most representative projects are: the development of a mobile application for teaching embryology in health sciences; the formulation of public policies with the participation of rural communities; the design of devices for monitoring air quality in cities; mental health promotion programs aimed at students and health professionals; tools for identifying trends in textile fashion in Pereira; and strategies for the prevention of gender violence.

*UCR - University of Costa Rica, Costa Rica

UCR is the oldest and largerst public university of higher learning in Costa Rica and boasts dozens of research insititutes in a variety of fields. UCR is excited to work with TTU to strengthen innovation and technological ecosystems; deepen international connections and facilitating multisectoral lingages; address national, regional, and global challenges and needs; broaden impact and work in the semiconductor industry; promote intercultural culture and gloabl citizenship; and engage in research on climate change, STEAM education, and other areas of mutual interest.

ULagos - University of Los Lagos, Chile

ULagos (Universidad de Los Lagos in Chile) targeted fields of research are: Disturbances and Risks in Coastal Socio-Ecological Systems; Sustainale Agri-food Systems, Climate Change, and Biodiversity; Sustainable Aquaculture Production; Qualify of Life and Human Well-being; and Global change, sociopolitical construction of territories, and location innovation systems.

*UNNOBA - National University of Northwestern Buenos Aires, Argentina

UNNOBA (Universidad Nacional del Noroeste de la Provincia de Buenos Aires) located in Argentina, is a university that integrates teaching, research, and outreach to contribute to social development and innovation. UNNOBA has a school of Agricultural, Natural, and Environmental Sciences, a School of Economic and Law, a School of Technology and the Academic Institute for Human Development. With undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and research programs, UNNOBA boasts a strong background in technical innovation and regional integration which complements TTU's strengths.

UQTR - University of Quebec at Three Rivers, Canada

At UQTR (Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières in Canada) the goal of international research is to contribute to developing UQTR by promoting the meeting of knowledge, cultures, and different sectors of society.  UQTR is proud to host nine different research centers and institutes, which contribute to the research and development mission of UQTR.
