F-1 Students
Academic
Did you change your major? Do you need a program extension? Going straight from one program level to another?
Note: If you're wondering how to enroll or wanting to change courses, you should contact your acadmic advisor instead. This is the individual that assists you with the courses required to complete your program.
Check-In
If you are an initial or transfer student arriving at TTU for the first time, you will need to complete the Check-In Process to maintain your F-1 visa status. The Check-In Process is not an appointment/meeting with your advisor.
To begin, follow the instructions here: How to Check-In. For additional questions, please email your international advisor.
Employment
Ready to apply for OPT or CPT? Questions about other employment issues?
Note: Requesting documents for your Social Security Number does not require an appointment with your advisor. To begin, please submit a request in your ISSS Student Portal.
For more SSN information, see Social Security. For information about OPT, see OPT Students. For information about CPT, see CPT Students.
Family Immigration
Do you need help with an immigration-related family matter?
Note: If you have an F-2 spouse who would like change visa status to F-1, the spouse must make an appointment to see his/her assigned advisor based on his/her family name.
Financial
Questions about financial issues?
Note: Please keep in mind that your international student advisor cannot provide financial assistance, as they can only assist F-1 students with F-1 visa regulations only. Please reach out to the International Student Life unit for financial inquiries and resources available to F-1 students.
Personal / Other
Need to discuss something personal or another topic not listed here?
Note: For serious personal issues, we strongly encourage students to see a counselor at the Student Counseling Center. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis and need to speak with someone immediately, call the Texas Tech Crisis HelpLine at 806-742-5555.
Travel
**You do not need to schedule an appointment to acquire a travel signature on your
I-20! Simply submit a request in your ISSS Student Portal here!**
F-1 visa students require a travel signature to re-enter the US when traveling abroad.
However, these requests are completed virtually and do not require an appointment.
Please submit a request in your ISSS Student Portal, then your I-20 will be made available there.
ALWAYS make sure you have a valid travel signature on your I-20 BEFORE you travel.
Only schedule a travel consultation if you have additional inquiries regarding travel.
A travel signature is valid for multiple re-entries for 1 year (or 6 months while
on OPT/STEM), or until you receive a new I-20.
