Frequently Asked Questions

I am a J-1 Student. Which orientation should I attend?

All J-1 international students (Undergraduate and Graduate) will take place on August 22nd, 2025.

Please register for International Techsans Day.

Where can I find Temporary Housing before I move into my dorm/apartment?

TTU housing does not offer any type of temporary housing for students. There are a lot of preparations that go into getting the rooms ready before students arrive between the Summer II semester and Fall.

However, we have put together a list of possible stay options that you can use while waiting.

Please visit our Dorms and Housing page for more information.

We also work with Visit Lubbock and local hotels to offer discounted hotel rates for you. You can find these hotels on the same page as our temporary housing options.

On-campus dining plans and how to refill accounts

All students living on campus are required to have a dining plan.

The great part about these plans is if you ever want family to refill your account from back home, they can!

View the TTU Hospitality Services website to learn more!

Will there be a parent session?

Yes!

We love meeting our students' parents, and we greatly appreciate how far you have come to see your student off.

We will host a parent session on August ___ at ___. Parents of both undergraduate and Graduate students are welcome to attend. This will be an open forum where you can ask questions and receive information from staff from across the International Office. The session will be led by Vice-Provost of International Affairs, Dr. Elizabeth Trejos-Castillo. She was at one time an International student herself in the USA and is now a mother who can relate on many levels to both the student and parent experience.

I am not an F1 Student. Can I still attend orientation?

We welcome many types of international students, from dual citizens to permanent residents.

It is not uncommon to have new TTU students who have grown up in another country but are in the USA as domestic students or non-F1 visa holders.

If you would like to attend one of our international orientations, we welcome you! Please contact kathleen.cade-gerzon@ttu.edu to get registered.

Will Buses run before classes start?

No.

On-campus buses will not be available until classes start.

This means that for your international orientations and RRO, you need to plan your transportation in advance. Transportation in Lubbock is limited as a whole. Locals rely on personal vehicles or ride shares such as Uber or Lyft.

Ride shares allow you to book a ride through an App. The driver will then come and pick you up and take you to your location. Payment and communication are all done via the app. The two most popular in the USA are Uber and Lyft.

Taxis are also available. If you are staying at a hotel, the front desk may be able to help you arrange a ride.
