J.D./M.S. in Personal Financial Planning (P.F.P.)
The School of Law, in partnership with the Graduate School, offers a dual degree program that allows students to earn both the Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) and the Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning (P.F.P.) degrees in three to four years. This program is ideal for students who wish to complement their legal education with a strong foundation in personal financial planning. Particularly those interested in practicing in areas such as taxation, estate planning, retirement planning, or employee benefits.
The P.F.P. degree satisfies the educational requirement to sit for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) exam. Students can complete both degrees with a total of 104 credit hours. The program allows for the transfer of up to 12 hours of approved law coursework toward the P.F.P. degree, and up to 12 hours of approved P.F.P. coursework toward the J.D. degree. These transfers apply to credit hours only; grades from graduate courses do not factor into the Law School GPA or class rank.
Students must declare their intent to pursue the dual degree no later than their fourth semester in law school. The first year is dedicated exclusively to the standard 1L law curriculum. In subsequent years, students complete remaining law requirements alongside P.F.P. coursework.
Students may enroll in the Graduate School prior to beginning law school to complete leveling courses and earn up to 12 P.F.P. credit hours. Only certain courses are permitted during this period. Students who complete more than 12 approved P.F.P. credit hours (excluding leveling coursework) before matriculating into the School of Law are not eligible for the dual degree.
Admission to the program requires acceptance to both the School of Law and the Graduate School. The Graduate School will accept the LSAT in place of the GRE or GMAT.
