The Honorable John C. Akard graduated from Texas A&M with a B.A. in Business before attending the University of Texas School of Law. He served as the United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Lubbock Division of the Northern District of Texas from 1986 until he retired in 2000. Before taking the bench, he was a bankruptcy attorney in El Paso for 29 years.
 
In 1999, the West Texas Bankruptcy Bar Association established the John C. Akard Scholarship to celebrate his outstanding career in bankruptcy law.
