Safety at Texas Tech university

Safety is of paramount importance to Texas Tech. TTU is committed to ensuring that our campus is safe for faculty, staff, students and visitors. The university has introduced a Safety First culture with revision of the Chemical Hygiene Plan and establishment of the Institutional Laboratory Safety Committee. However, there is still work to do. Assuring a safe work environment is a daily commitment that takes consistent and collaborative efforts by each and every member of the Texas Tech community.

Our daily commitment to a Safety First culture takes many forms. It is important that faculty teach students to assess the risks that accompany creative research and scholarship, that staff leaders make safety a core component of units, that Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) personnel assist with safety questions and concerns, and that all members of the TTU community take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Safety includes not only the chemicals in our labs, but also the electrical cords in our offices, the ways we operate university-owned vehicles, and numerous other possible hazards within our university environment.

Safety starts with you. If you observe anyone who is participating in an unsafe activity, or if you are asked to participate in an activity on campus that you consider to be unsafe, then we require that you express your concern immediately in an attempt to mitigate the situation, and that you report this occurrence at your first opportunity to the EHS Office by calling: (806) 742-3876. You can anonymously submit safety concerns using the Safety Concern & Near-Miss (SCAN) Form on the EHS website. If for some reason this concern is not addressed to your satisfaction, then we require that you further report this situation to the Office of Research & Innovation by calling (806) 742-3904. If you have general safety questions, please email safety@ttu.edu.
