The purpose of the Magnetic Field Safety program on campus is to ensure the safe usage of all magnets with static fields of more than 0.5 milliTeslas. These fields can cause damage to individuals using medical devices such as pacemakers.
Environmental Health & Safety provides initial safety training for personnel working with the all magentic field exposure in excess of 2 Tesla, and helps to establish safe working procedures. Additionally, EHS performs scheduled surveys of all controlled magnetic field use areas and laboratory spaces to make sure researcher and staff are meeting with University, State, and Federal government regulations.
