Bio:


Matthew Looney was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, but considers San Antonio home. He moved to Lubbock, Texas, to pursue a Chemistry degree at Texas Tech University. During his education, Matthew conducted research at Université Bordeaux 1 in France, focusing on synthetic organic chemistry for a D.E.S.S. in Biomaterials.

After his studies in France, Matthew worked for a San Francisco-based company for 11 years, managing medical and research cyclotrons and nuclear isotopes. As Director of Operations, he oversaw five domestic nuclear laboratories and three cyclotron facilities, including one in Mexico.

In 2013, Matthew joined Texas Tech University as Radiation Safety Officer and Laser Safety Officer, ensuring compliance and safety across radiation programs.

Matthew holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Applied Economics from Texas Tech University, as well as a B.S. in Economics from Penn State University and a D.E.S.S. from Université Bordeaux 1 and a  B.S. in Chemistry from Texas Tech University. He has expertise in R, Python, C++, SAS, SQL, and cloud platforms like AWS and Azure.

His research interests include applied industrial organization, data science, econometrics, and computational economics. Dr. Looney has presented at international conferences, including the American Chemical Society (ACS), World Trade Organization (WTO), and The United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Dr. Looney is a member of the American Economics Association, American Statistical Association, and American Chemical Society.
