TTU Street Safe

Street Safe Campaign logo

The Street Safe campaign at Texas Tech is dedicated to fostering a safer campus environment by empowering students, faculty/staff, and visitors with the knowledge and tools to navigate our university responsibly. Our mission is to raise awareness about pedestrian, road, and sidewalk safety and encourage predictable behavior with the hopes of minimizing injuries and accidents. We aim to cultivate a culture of vigilance and respect both on campus and in the surrounding community.

During the fall semester, we will focus on Driving & Pedestrian Safety.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, Pedestrian traffic fatalities increased 30 percent in Texas from 2018 through 2022 and now account for one in five of all roadway deaths. In 2022, there were 5,766 crashes involving pedestrians in our state, resulting in 830 deaths. Another 1,526 people were seriously injured.

Pedestrian Safety Tips

  • Minimize distractions. Keep your head up and your phone down.
  • Always walk on sidewalks when they're available. If they aren't available, walk facing oncoming traffic. Never turn your back to traffic.
  • Be predictable. Cross at crosswalks and intersections. Look both directions before crossing.
  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Do not assume that vehilces will stop even if you are at a crosswalk.
  • Be visible. Wear reflective clothing or use a flashlight at night. Stay in well-lit areas, especially when crossing the street.
  • Be especially aware of cars turning left or right and those entering and exiting parking lots.
