Major: Cell and Molecular Biology

Hometown: Lubbock, TX

Career Goals: Physician

Favorite part of being a Bayless Mentor: I absolutely love the time I get to spend with my mentee each week; from working on his reading skills to playing games, each visit is full of fun. It has been extremely rewarding to watch my mentee grow over time in his academics as well as witness him become a more independent, confident, and intrigued student. Going to Bayless is truly the highlight of my week.

Classification: Junior

Major: Microbiology

Hometown: Katy, TX

Career Goals: Dentist

Favorite part of being a Bayless Mentor:  I love how I am always able to laugh with my mentee. We have some of the most fun moments together and it makes me truly value the company of a younger “sibling” seeing as how I never got that opportunity as I was the younger sibling to my older brother. Being a mentee truly helps to make some of the toughest days become the brightest ones!

Karla de la Garza

Email: karla.de-la-garza@ttu.edu

Classification: Senior

Major: Microbiology

Hometown: San Antonio, TX

Career Goals: Physicians Advocate (PA) - not sure what field, but leaning towards Anesthesiology

Favorite part of being a Bayless Mentor: I love getting to connect with students that I would not have had the opportunity to connect with. Every interaction with a student at Bayless has been a blessing and leaves me wanting to give back more. From one-on-one interactions, to meeting my mentees' friends, to having the privilege of mentoring a student whose parent had passed, I have loved every second I spend with my mentees. Working as a Bayless Mentor for the past three years has taught me patience, understanding, and how to foster a connection with a student so that they feel safe and comfortable to be mentored. I am incredibly thankful for my time at Bayless Elementary and the opportunity to continue to serve.

Erin Millican

Email: Erin.Millican@ttu.edu

Classification: Senior

Major: Honors Sciences and the Humanities

Hometown: Bedford, TX

Career Goals: Physician, but I want to specialize in pediatrics.

Favorite part of being a Bayless Mentor: The best part about being a mentor is the friendship you develop with your mentee. With my mom being a former elementary school teacher, every week we devise creative new ways to sneak education into our time together, from reading (every person can appreciate a good story) to creating a diary to math games. I love both the planning and trying to execute those plans every week. However, in the moments where my mentee and I could stop laughing or the times where she would say that she loves me, I am completely satisfied.
